Our Beliefs
The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a Christian denomination which is mainline Protestant and evangelical. The UMC traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley within the Church of England. As such, our theological orientation is heavily steeped in Wesleyan tradition. Our worship services include both liturgical and evangelical elements. While taking the position of being “inclusive” (meaining that we can sometimes agree to disagree over the finer points of theology and worship practices) the core of our faith lies in the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he is our Lord and Savior. Our beliefs are summarized in the “Apostle’s Creed” which is included in each of our worship services and is listed here:
- I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
- And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
- who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
- born of the Virgin Mary,
- suffered under Pontius Pilate,
- was crucified, dead, and buried;
- the third day he rose from the dead;
- he ascended into heaven,
- and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
- from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
- I believe in the Holy Spirit,
- the holy catholic church,
- the communion of saints,
- the forgiveness of sins,
- the resurrection of the body,
- and the life everlasting. Amen.
